Ahead of the International Day of Yoga, which is observed on June 21, residents of Tartu in Estonia took part in a special yoga event on Saturday. The programme was organised by the Embassy of India in Tallinn at the historic Town Hall Square (Raekoja Plats) in the heart of the city.

Tartu Hosts Yoga Event

The free public event saw participation from local residents along with officials despite chilly rain. Ambassador Ashish Sinha and Vice Mayor Ms Kertu Vuks joined the gathering and highlighted the message of “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” promoting its benefits across different cultures and regions. The aim of this event was to spread awareness about the importance of yoga and its role in promoting a healthy lifestyle.

Residents Participate Despite Chilly Rain

Sharing videos and pictures from the event, the Embassy of India in Tallinn, wrote on X, “Tartu residents braved the chilly rain to celebrate the 12th #InternationalDayofYoga on Saturday, June 13, 2026. The Embassy of India in Tallinn hosted the free public event. It took place right in the middle of Tartu at the historic Town Hall Square (Raekoja Plats). Ambassador Ashish Sinha and Vice Mayor Ms Kertu Vuks joined the gathering and brought out the message of ‘Yoga for Healthy Ageing’ across geographies and cultures.”

India Gears Up for 12th International Day of Yoga

Meanwhile, India is in full swing preparing for the 12th International Day of Yoga, which will be observed on June 21. Spearheaded by the Ministry of Ayush, the nationwide campaign this year focuses on the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” with the main event scheduled to be held in Kolkata, West Bengal.

What's The Theme?

According to a PIB release, published on May 27, Union Minister of State for Ayush and Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Shri Prataprao Jadhav announced the theme for this year, highlighting the role of yoga in promoting physical health, mental well-being, and healthy ageing. The announcement was made during Yoga Mahotsav 2026 organised at the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Western Group of Temples, Khajuraho, marking the start of the 25-day countdown to Yoga day.

Addressing the gathering, Jadhav said Yoga represents India’s ancient wisdom and plays a key role in preventive healthcare and balanced living. He added that Kolkata, which reflects India’s rich cultural and spiritual heritage, will host the main celebration this year.
