Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said that the Khalistani supporters in Canada don't represent the Sikh community as a whole. The remark came at a time when India and Canada's diplomatic ties have severed.

"There are many supporters of Khalistan in Canada but they do not represent the Sikh community as a whole," said Trudeau as quoted by Hindustan Times. According to the report, the remark by the Canadian PM was made during an event in Ottawa’s Parliament Hill on Monday.

His comments were made a day after pro-Khalistan activists launched a violent attack on the Hindu Sabha Mandir in Brampton, escalating tensions as the outraged Indo-Canadian community clashed with the separatists.

"There is no room for violence or intolerance or intimidation or division. That is not who are," said Trudeau, according to the Hindustan Times.

"We encourage people to hold on to their cultures and their communities. The challenge is that in holding all those different opinions, we must never let them divide us," he said further.

He also reaffirmed that his government is committed to "One India" and the country's territorial integrity. However, he did not hold back in his criticism of New Delhi, stating, "There are many supporters of the (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi government in Canada, but they do not represent all Hindu Canadians as a whole."

MEA Issues Notice About 'Memo' On Indian Diplomats Going Viral On Social Media

External Affairs Ministry on Friday termed as fake a 'secretly issued memo' that has surfaced on social media and that falsely attempts to link Indian diplomats abroad with violent crimes.

No such memo has been issued by Government of India, the External Affairs Ministry said.

"The said GoI communication is fake," the External Publicity and Public Diplomacy Division (XP Division), of the Ministry of External Affairs said.

The April 2023 dated fake memo purportedly from former Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra asks Indian diplomats to "cultivate" Indian diaspora groups in Canada "as vital force in the street confrontations with Sikh extremists".
