Bangladesh Protest: Anti-India slogans were raised again on the streets of Dhaka as Bangladesh witnessed fresh protests over rising prices, power shortages and a lack of fuel and gas. The rally held on Friday was led by National Citizen Party (NCP) convenor and Member of Parliament Nahid Islam. The protesters demanded the resignation of Bangladesh's Home and Energy Ministers, while also raising slogans targeting India.

Nahid Islam Leads Mass Rally In Dhaka

The protest was held in front of the National Museum in Dhaka and drew a large crowd. Videos shared on social media showed NCP leaders raising the slogan "Dilli na Dhaka", to which the crowd responded with "Dhaka, Dhaka". Sharing a video of the protest on X, Nahid wrote, "Unstoppable. Our fight continues until all 4 demands, including the resignation of the Home Minister, are met. InshaAllah!" He is one of the prominent faces of the 2024 July uprising that led to the removal of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Allegations Against India

The rally was also attended by NCP MP Hasnat Abdullah, who had earlier threatened to "cut off" India's Seven Sisters, referring to the northeastern states. During his speech, Nahid also accused India of interfering in Bangladesh's affairs. He claimed that the current government would not be able to protect the country from alleged Indian conspiracies.

“The current government will not be able to protect Bangladesh from India's conspiracies,” Nahid said, as quoted by Prothom Alo. He also spoke about the Ganga Water Sharing Treaty between India and Bangladesh, demanding that the agreement be renegotiated on fair terms. The agreement is due to expire in December this year. “This time, we will not compromise even an inch on our rightful share," Nahid said. He warned that people would take to the streets again if their demands were not met.

Anti-India Rhetoric

Anti-India statements have become more frequent in Bangladesh since Hasina was removed from power in August 2024. During the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus, several political and student leaders made remarks against New Delhi. Before the Bangladesh elections, Nahid had called for nationwide protests against “Indian interference”. Hasnat Abdullah had also threatened to isolate India's northeastern states and provide shelter to “anti-India elements”.
