Europe is currently experiencing record-breaking heatwaves with temperatures rising past 40 degrees Celsius across several countries. The extreme weather event has triggered red alerts and mass health warnings in the United Kingdom, France, Italy and Spain and renewed discussion on climate change. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has also noted this as part of a trend of rapid warming.

Which Is The Hottest Place On Earth?

People in these countries are struggling to cope with the hot weather, but do you know which is the hottest place on Earth? While many of us would naturally point out a place near the equator as regions along this imaginary circle receive the most direct sunlight, it is not the case. The Death Valley in California, United States, located approximately 2,275 to 2,900 miles north of the Equator holds the title of the hottest place on Earth.

Why Death Valley Is The Hottest Despite Being Far From Equator?

The reason behind this is geographic and atmospheric factors, including its extreme below-sea-level elevation, isolating mountain ranges, and arid conditions. All these factors combine to trap heat like a giant, natural convection oven, making it extremely hot. As the region lacks vegetation, it creates a "heat sink" where dense air continually stores heat from intense sunshine. Since there is no water or much vegetation, the sun's energy directly bakes the bare rocks and desert soils. These surfaces then radiate heat back into the trapped air.

Additionally, rainfall is scarce in Death Valley due to low humidity throughout the year. As it is far from the equator, the region experiences longer days in summer, allowing the sun to heat the valley floor. As a result, Death Valley experiences some of the highest temperatures recorded anywhere on Earth. In August 2020 and July 2021, temperatures of 54.4 degrees Celsius were recorded at the Furnace Creek weather station.

Despite extreme hot weather, Death Valley is a highly popular tourist destination. It attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors annually who come to experience its surreal, Mars-like landscapes. Other than Death Valley, two more places have been recently identified as having weather conditions similar to it. These include the Lut Desert in Iran and the Sonoran Desert along the Mexican-US border.
