Sydney Bondi Beach shooting: An unarmed man showed extraordinary courage during a deadly shooting at Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach, overpowering and disarming one of the attackers amid scenes of chaos and terror. The dramatic incident, captured on camera and widely shared on social media, occurred during a public Hanukkah celebration that drew nearly 1,000 to 2,000 people on Sunday evening

At least 10 people were killed and several others injured after two gunmen opened fire on the crowd around 6:45 pm local time. Witnesses said more than 50 gunshots rang out across the beachfront, triggering panic as families and children ran for cover or hid inside nearby buildings.

Dramatic Act of Bravery Caught on Camera

Amid the confusion, a bystander later identified as 43-year-old Ahmed Al Ahmed confronted one of the gunmen. A 15-second viral video shows Ahmed initially taking cover behind parked cars before charging the shooter from behind. He can be seen grabbing the gunman by the neck, wrestling the rifle away and pinning him to the ground, aiming the weapon back at the attacker until police arrived

Eyewitnesses said the gunman had been hiding behind a tree when Ahmed intervened, an act that authorities believe prevented further bloodshed and saved numerous lives.

Fighting For Life In Hospital

Ahmed sustained multiple gunshot wounds, primarily to his left arm, with one bullet lodged near his shoulder blade that doctors have yet to remove. He remains hospitalised at St George Hospital in Kogarah and may lose his left arm due to the severity of his injuries.

“He’s a lot worse than expected. He’s riddled with bullets and has lost a lot of blood,” Sam Issa, Ahmed’s migration lawyer, told local media after visiting him. Despite the pain, Issa said Ahmed has no regrets. “He said he would do it again.”

In his first message from the hospital, Ahmed thanked people around the world for their prayers and support. “Only Allah knows what I’ve been through,” he said, asking well-wishers to pray for his recovery. Dubbed the “Bondi Beach Hero,” Ahmed has received widespread praise for his selfless act.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and New South Wales Premier Chris Minns commended Ahmed’s bravery, calling his actions an example of extraordinary humanity. A GoFundMe campaign set up to support him and his family has raised more than USD 570,000, with donations pouring in from across the globe, including a significant contribution from US billionaire Bill Ackman.

Ahmed, a Syrian-born Australian citizen and father of two young daughters, said he acted out of gratitude to the community that welcomed him. “He’s a humble man. He just did what he felt compelled to do as a human being,” Issa said.
