Trump's Davos 2026 Speech:US President Donald Trump’s address at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, quickly became one of the most talked-about speeches of the 2026 summit, as he mixed humour, economic boasts and sharp geopolitical warnings. Opening with a joke about returning to Davos “with so many friends, a few enemies,” Trump set the tone for a speech that repeatedly challenged Europe’s political direction and reaffirmed America’s global dominance.

Greenland: ‘Strategic National Security’ Without Force

One of the most controversial elements of Trump’s speech was his renewed focus on Greenland. While reiterating that the United States needs Greenland for “strategic national security,” Trump insisted he would not use military force to acquire the Danish autonomous territory.

“I won’t use force,” Trump said, even as he claimed the US would be “unstoppable” in any armed conflict involving Europe over the island. He confirmed that Washington is seeking “immediate negotiations” to reopen talks on Greenland’s future, framing the issue as a matter of long-term security rather than territorial expansion.

Europe ‘Not Heading In Right Direction’

Trump delivered a blunt assessment of Europe, warning that parts of the continent are “not even recognisable” and arguing that Europe is moving in the wrong direction. He cited what he described as ever-increasing government spending, flawed migration policies and unfair trade practices.

Despite stressing his personal affection for Europe, Trump said current policies were weakening the region and leaving it increasingly dependent on American military and economic power.

Economic Claims And US ‘Transformation’

Much of Trump’s speech focused on what he called America’s economic turnaround under his leadership. He claimed inflation had been “defeated,” pointed to core inflation at 1.6 per cent, and predicted fourth-quarter 2025 economic growth of 5.4 per cent, figures significantly higher than mainstream projections.

Trump also highlighted tighter border controls, declaring that the US had secured what was once an “open and dangerous border.” He promised to share the “recipe” for US success with other countries, calling his presidency “the most remarkable transformation in US history.”

Ukraine War And Venezuela Remarks

On global conflicts, Trump said he believed both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin wanted to end the war in Ukraine. He announced plans to meet Zelenskyy during the Davos gathering.

Trump also referenced the US’s recent operation involving Venezuela, claiming that the country’s leadership had since cooperated with Washington. “The leadership of the country has been very good … very, very smart,” he said.

NATO And ‘Ungrateful’ Allies

Trump concluded by criticising NATO allies, arguing that the US has not been adequately appreciated for its military and economic contributions. “What did the US get out of all of this work, all this money, other than death, destruction and massive amounts of cash going to people who don’t appreciate what we do?” he asked.

The speech reinforced Trump’s long-standing view that America bears an unfair share of global security responsibilities and that this imbalance must change.
