US President Donald Trump, following his meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, assured that the scheduled tariffs will not be imposed on the NATO Nations. In a post on Truth Social, the US president stated that he had agreed on a "framework of a future deal" with the NATO chief. He stated that the framework of a deal with respect to Greenland and "entire Arctic region" was formed during the meeting. The reports suggest that the NATO members have suggested the US to build more American military bases on Greenland as part of a compromise. However, Rutte stated that the matter of Greenland was not discussed with the US president in the meeting.
In his post, Trump stated that additional discussions on the Golden Dome are being held, adding that more information will be provided in the coming days. "This solution, if consummated, will be a great one for the United States of America, and all NATO Nations. Based upon this understanding, I will not be imposing the Tariffs that were scheduled to go into effect on February 1st," Trump stated in his post.
"Additional discussions are being held concerning The Golden Dome as it pertains to Greenland. Further information will be made available as discussions progress. Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and various others, as needed, will be responsible for the negotiations — They will report directly to me. Thank you for your attention to this matter!" he added.
What's In The Framework?
A part of the deal includes renegotiating the 1951 agreement (presence of US military on island), reported CNN, citing sources. Apart from this, the NATO has also discussed a possibility of building more military bases on the island. During his speech in Davos, Trump stated that he will not use military force to acquire the island; however, he insisted that the US will take control of the Greenland.
