Newly surfaced dashcam footage has revealed the final moments of a married couple who were killed while attempting to stop one of the gunmen during the deadly terror attack at Sydney’s Bondi Beach. The video shows Boris and Sofia Gurman confronting an armed attacker as he emerged from a vehicle, in what witnesses and family have described as a courageous effort to protect others.
The couple, aged 69 and 61, were among 15 people killed when two gunmen, a father and son, opened fire near Archer Park, adjacent to Bondi Beach, during a Hanukkah celebration on Sunday evening.
What Happened During Bondi Beach Attack
The attack unfolded on the first night of the Jewish festival of lights, sending shockwaves across Australia. Police confirmed that one of the attackers, 50-year-old Sajid Akram, was shot dead at the scene after killing victims aged between 10 and 87 years old.
The second gunman, his 24-year-old son Naveed Akram, was critically injured during the confrontation. He later regained consciousness in hospital after briefly falling into a coma and remains under police guard.
Dashcam Video Captures Couple’s Final Moments
Boris and Sofia Gurman were identified as the couple seen in the viral dashcam video that has circulated widely on social media, including the Chinese platform Rednote. According to The Sydney Morning Herald and News.com.au, the footage shows the couple attempting to tackle one of the shooters as he exited a car bearing an Islamic State flag across its windshield.
The confrontation occurred in the early moments of the attack, as the gunman began firing near the park where families had gathered for the Hanukkah event.

“We are heartbroken by the sudden and senseless loss of our beloved Boris and Sofia Gurman,” their family said in a statement. The couple had been married for 34 years and were preparing to celebrate their 35th wedding anniversary in January. The family was also planning to mark Sofia’s 62nd birthday later this month.
The Russian-Jewish couple lived in Bondi and had a son in his 30s. Boris was a retired mechanic known for his quiet generosity, while Sofia worked at Australia Post and was deeply respected by colleagues and neighbours.
Witnesses Describe ‘Fearless’ Act Of Courage
Family members said their grief is matched by pride in the couple’s bravery. “Nothing can ease the pain of losing Boris and Sofia, but their instinct to protect others defines who they were,” the statement read.
The owner of the dashcam footage told Reuters that Boris did not attempt to flee. “He ran directly toward the threat, using everything he had to fight for others,” she said, adding that watching him collapse after being shot was “heartbreaking.”
