Afghan Onions In Pune:  A new supply of onions was sent to Pune's Market Yard from Afghanistan via Amritsar. In the wholesale market, these onions, which are prized for their size and vivid red hue, are currently being sold for Rs 40 a kilogram. These onions have not yet found their way into the domestic retail sector and are mostly bought by establishments like hotels and professional purchasers.

Due to a sharp decline in arrivals, local onion prices have stayed steady despite the Afghan imports. According to reports, the supply of onions has decreased by about 30 percent from its typical level, which has helped to maintain stable pricing for local produce.

These imports helped to stabilise prices due to the nation's ongoing lack of onions. Traders from the Chakan region and Pune city have bought the majority of the 18 tonnes of Afghan onions that Ram Narwade's Narwade & Co delivered to the Market Yard, reported Punekarnews.

Eighty of the 90 trucks that arrived at the market on Tuesday were transporting freshly grown onions from the districts of Beed and Nagar. Arrivals are lower than usual, though, as a large portion of the fresh crop has been harmed by the retreating monsoon. Depending on quality, new onions cost anywhere from Rs 35 to Rs 50 per kilogram in the wholesale market.

The supply as a whole has been further impacted by the decline in the quantity of stored old onions. Upon arriving in Pune that same day, ten truckloads of onions from Nashik sold for between Rs 50 and Rs 60 per kilogram in the wholesale market.
