The 154-year-old Mumbai bridge is ready to serve Mumbaikars once again after the original structure connecting Masjid and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) was demolished three years ago. The Carnac bridge is set to open next week, serving as crucial connectivity in South Mumbai.
All the structural work of the bridge has been completed, as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) confirmed that load testing was carried out successfully between June 13 and June 15.
Factors that are causing the delay in the opening of the bridge are the final approval from the traffic police and a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Railways, both of which are expected shortly.
The old Carnac bridge only featured two lanes, while the new one encompasses four vehicular lanes, enhancing the capacity. This expansion is expected to greatly reduce traffic congestion on the busy roads of South Mumbai, particularly along the P D’Mello Road corridor.
The bridge will significantly enhance the connectivity, providing an easy east-west route for vehicles. The bride will be connected with key routes such as the Eastern Freeway and the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link at the same time.
The demolition to build a new bridge began in 2022, several years after the project was proposed in 2016. Several encroachments, including a police outpost, an electrical substation, a temple, and a gym, caused a delay in the project.
