Mumbai Weather Update: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that Cyclone Shakhti will gradually weaken from Monday morning and recurve eastwards. As of Sunday, the system is expected to continue moving west-southwestwards, reaching the northwest and adjoining the west-central Arabian Sea by evening. A “yellow alert” has been issued for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Pune and Ratnagiri districts.

Maharashtra On Alert 

While parts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, were placed on alert for heavy rain during the cyclone, the IMD on Sunday significantly downgraded its forecast for Mumbai and surrounding areas. Only light, scattered rain or drizzles are now expected in the city until October 8.

Between October 3 and 5, wind speeds of 45-55 kmph, gusting up to 65 kmph, are likely along the North Maharashtra coast, with the possibility of higher speeds depending on the cyclone’s intensity. Heavy to very heavy rain has been forecast in interior Maharashtra, particularly Marathwada and East Vidarbha, with a risk of flooding in low-lying areas of North Konkan.

On October 9, the temperature will be 32/24 Degree Celsius with 0 percent humidity and a forecast of a partly cloudy sky in the morning, becoming generally cloudy by evening or night with a possibility of rain or thundershowers accompanied by squalls.

Shakhti Cyclone 

The name “Shakhti” was suggested by Sri Lanka under the WMO/ESCAP Panel on Tropical Cyclones, which allows 13 countries around the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea to propose cyclone names. Cyclone Shakthi, the first cyclonic storm after the monsoon season, has churned up the Arabian Sea with winds of around 100 kmph and gusts since Saturday.

The Maharashtra government has directed district administrations to activate disaster management systems, draw up evacuation plans for vulnerable areas, issue public advisories, and ensure public safety during heavy rainfall.
