Mumbai Police on Friday said that they had captured a member of the Chhota Rajan gang, who had been evading arrest for 32 years in an attempt to murder case from the eastern suburbs. Vilas Balaram Pawar, also known as Raju, 62, was apprehended by a team from the Deonar police station on Thursday night in the Chembur region, according to an official.
He claimed Pawar is involved in serious crimes such as murder and attempted murder and has cases filed against him under the Arms Act.
According to the official, the accused was arrested in connection with the 1992 murder of a man in Ghatla village, freed on bail in 2008, and has since been absconding.
He claimed that to avoid being arrested, he kept moving.

The official said the accused was a member of the Chhota Rajan gang and was responsible for gunning down a guy in Dadar during the 1990s.
According to the official, Pawar was brought into court on Friday and remanded to judicial custody.
To note, a few moths before, the Bombay High Court suspended the sentence of gangster Rajendra Sadashiv Nikalje, alias Chhota Rajan, and granted him bail in connection with the 2001 murder case of hotelier Jaya Shetty. This was Rajan's second life sentence, as he is already serving a similar sentence for the 2011 murder of journalist Jyotirmoy Dey.
On May 30, 2024, a special MCOCA Court convicted Rajan along with others and sentenced him to life imprisonment. He had filed a plea in the Mumbai High Court in this regard.
