Jalna Road Accident: Five people died in a road accident in central Maharashtra's Jalna district on Friday. Police said the accident occurred when a car in which they were travelling plunged into a 70-foot-deep well in Jalna district at Gadegavhan village on the Bhokardan-Jafrabad road.

The official said the vehicle was running at high speed and the driver lost control while coming from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and heading towards Jafrabad. The speeding car first hit a local resident, Bhagvan Bankar, who was on a morning walk, then the vehicle veered off the road and plunged into the well.

Bhagvan sustained serious injuries in the accident. Locals took him to the hospital. The victims killed in the accident were identified as Dnyaneshwar Bhambre (55), Ajinath Bhambre (40), Padmabai Bhambre (55), all residents of Koparda village in Bhokardan tehsil; Dnyaneshwar Dakle (40), a resident of Hudco, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar; and Nirmala Dakle (25) from Grorai Gungi village in Phulambri tehsil. Nirmala Dakle, who was suffering from paralysis, had requested her relative Dnyaneshwar Dakle to drive her to Sultanpur for treatment.

Police said soon after receiving information about the accident teams from Hasnabad and Tembhurni police stations rushed to the spot. The fire brigade personnel and the district disaster management were also called in.

They jointly lunched a challenging rescue operation to pull out bodies from the well. The rescue operation lasted several hours, the bodies were fished out and the car was pulled out with the help of a crane. The well, nearly 70 feet deep, was filled with around 60 feet of water which made the operation extremely difficult.

Not Wearing Seat Belts Claimed 16,025 Lives In Road Accidents In 2023: MoRTH

Meanwhile, a report by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) stated that 16,025 people were killed in road accidents in 2023 as they were not wearing seat belts. Of the casualties, 8,441 were drivers while the remaining 7,584 were passengers, according to the report titled 'Road accidents in India 2023'. A total number of 4,80,583 road accidents have been reported by Police Departments of States and Union Territories (UTs) in the country during the calendar year 2023, claiming 1,72,890 lives and causing injuries to 4,62,825 persons.
