A policeman in Maharashtra's Thane was demoted for allegedly posting objectionable content about Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and some other political leaders. The accused, a havaldar by rank, reportedly posted an objectionable message on Whatsapp group which led to his demotion to the rank of constable for one year, an official said on Saturday.
Police said that the officer made the controversial remark on July 3, prompting a departmental inquiry against his misconduct. Following the investigation, the officer’s actions were deemed a violation of service regulations and a breach of political neutrality.
The deputy commissioner of police issued an order demoting the officer to the rank of constable for one year. However, the lenient punishment was influenced by his service record, family situation, and years of service, an official stated.
"As per the order of the deputy commissioner of police, he was demoted as his actions were seen as a breach of service regulations and showed lack of neutrality. The lenient order of one-year demotion was taken on account of his service record, family situation, and length of service," the official said as quoted by news agency PTI.
In a related incident, West Bengal Police booked a man for allegedly circulating fake news on social media with the intent to defame Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud. The Krishnanagar Police, in a post on X, stated that the fake news aimed to malign the CJI and undermine the dignity of the Supreme Court, inciting distrust and disturbing public peace.
A cyber complaint was filed against the accused, Sujit Haldar, a resident of Fulbari in Krishnaganj district regarding the derogatory social media posts. Police stated that they would take the "sternest possible legal action" against individuals attempting to tarnish the judiciary’s image.
