In yet another case of rising financial fraud, a film-style heist in Kavathemahankal of Sangli district in Maharashtra duped a local doctor of Rs 26 lakh in cash and gold worth Rs 2 crore. The fraud unfolded as an income tax raid by four individuals posing as officials, who entered the home of renowned doctor Jagannath Mhetre on Sunday night, taking a huge amount of money and gold ornaments away.
Maharahstra Fraud: How The Filmy Heist Took Place
- The impostors deceived the doctor with a fake ‘search warrant’ as they carried out the robbery under the guise of an official tax raid, drawing eerie parallels with the Bollywood movie ‘Special 26’.
- The impostors pretended to be conducting a search and thoroughly inspected the house, ultimately confiscating around Rs 16 million in cash and 1 kg of gold jewellery worth approximately Rs 2 crore.
- Doctor Mhetre initially believed the officers were legitimate, but as the "raid" progressed, his suspicions grew. He promptly contacted the Kavathemahankal police, who swiftly arrived at the scene and uncovered the fake operation.
- The incident has sparked considerable concern in Sangli district, with authorities continuing their investigation into the matter. The police are working to identify the culprits behind the fake raid, which involved stealing a substantial amount of cash and gold.

Kerala Man Put Under House Arrest By Fake Police, Duped Crores
In another case of economic offence involving fake authoritative figures, a Kerala man was put under house arrest by cyber criminals who posed as police. An elderly man lost Rs 3.72 crore after being 'virtually arrested' by a cyber fraud gang in South Kerala district, Kollam. The Kollam City Cyber Police registered a case on Tuesday based on the complaint.
