Mumbai Eid-e-Milad Holiday: The Maharashtra government on Thursday rescheduled the date of the Eid-e-Milad holiday for Mumbai city and nearby districts. Originally scheduled for September 5, the holiday will now be observed on Monday, September 8. However, the date of the Eid-e-Milad holiday will remain unchanged for the other parts of Maharashtra.
This change comes after the Muslim community members proposed postponing the Eid celebrations to avoid a clash with Anant Chaturdashi (the last day of the Ganesh festival). Anant Chaturdashi, which falls on September 6, is a Hindu festival in which Ganesh idols are taken in procession and immersed in water. The state government has approved the proposal and issued a revised circular to avoid a clash between two major festivals.
“The change was made after Muslim community members in Mumbai decided to hold Eid processions on Monday”, news agency PTI quoted a government official as saying.
In a circular, the General Administration Department (GAD) stated that the revised date of the Eid-e-Milad holiday is only applicable to Mumbai city and suburban districts. In other parts of Maharashtra, September 5 will be observed as Eid-e-Milad holiday.
According to the circular, all government offices in Mumbai city and suburbs will function as usual on Friday. Schools and colleges will also remain open on Friday, and will instead remain closed on Monday.
Both Anant Chaturdashi and Eid-e-Milad attract thousands of participants, requiring significant public deployment to manage the crowd. By observing both the festivals on separate days, government officials aim to ease administrative pressure and ensure peaceful celebration. This marks the third consecutive year the Muslim community have chosen to shift their Eid-e-Milad celebrations.
