Maharashtra News: A junior doctor at a government hospital in Jalgaon, Maharashtra, sustained serious injuries after being attacked by the relatives of a patient on Friday. The doctor, identified as Dr Mohit Gadiya, suffered a ruptured eardrum and a bleeding nose during the assault.
According to the police, the incident occurred when Dr Gadiya, who was attending to patients injured in firecracker mishaps, asked some attendants to step outside the overcrowded ward. The family members refused to comply and began assaulting him, punching him repeatedly. After realising he was bleeding, the attackers fled, taking their patient to another hospital.
The hospital administration immediately informed the police, who have since detained two suspects. Authorities have launched an investigation into the assault.
Following the attack, the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) demanded permanent security on the hospital premises, stating that this was the third attack on medical staff in recent months.
Police said that action will be taken under laws protecting healthcare professionals. Assaulting doctors and healthcare workers is a non-bailable offence, carrying a jail term of up to seven years along with a heavy fine.
