Maharashtra Weather: Mumbai continues to reel under heavy rainfall with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning of more showers within the next few hours. The downpour has added to the city’s weather woes, leading to waterlogging and traffic snarls across multiple areas.

In view of heavy rain in Mumbai, the traffic police has issued an advisory. “Due to two feet of rainwater accumulating at the Andheri subway, traffic has been closed, and the traffic there has been diverted via Gokhale Bridge and Thackeray Bridge,” it said in a post on X.

The Andheri subway has also been closed due to waterlogging.Videos shared online showed people walking through waterlogged roads. The weather department has issued a rain alert for Borivali, Malad, Kandivali, Goregaon, Thane, Andheri-Ghatkopar, BKC, Kurla, and Chembur.

A yellow alert for Mumbai Suburban, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Latur and Beed for Monday.

"Rain is expected to get heavier in the next 48 hours, and there may also be strong winds and thunderstorms," said the IMD, urging residents to remain cautious as adverse weather is likely to persist. Heavy rain lashed several parts of Mumbai, adding to the ongoing weather-related challenges in the city.

Several parts of Mumbai were inundated over the weekend, disrupting normal life. The flooding of key roads led to massive traffic jams, while the Andheri Subway was temporarily shut earlier in the week due to water accumulation. As the city deals with these challenges, the IMD forecast warns of continuing instability, with more rain, lightning, and gusty winds expected over the next few days.

The city’s water supply, however, appears to be in a healthy state. Data released by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on July 19 indicated that the seven reservoirs providing water to Mumbai are now 81.86 per cent full, collectively holding 11,84,796 million litres. While this offers some relief on the water supply front, the continuous rain has added pressure to civic infrastructure.

According to the IMD’s extended forecast, Mumbai is set for a wet week ahead. Monday and Tuesday will bring moderate rainfall with overcast skies, while Wednesday and Thursday are expected to see heavier showers.

"Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds reaching up to 40 kilometres per hour" are also predicted for July 21 and 22. A heavy rain warning remains in effect for July 23 and 24, though no alerts have been issued for July 25 and 26 despite continued rainfall.

Across India, rainfall patterns are tracking close to normal in many regions. States and Union territories such as Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Punjab, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu have received rain within 19 per cent of the average seasonal range. The monsoon remains critical to India’s economy, especially agriculture, which sustains about 42 per cent of the population and contributes over 18 per cent to the national GDP.
