The Mumbai traffic police have begun the process of suspending the licenses of over 28,800 taxi and autorickshaw drivers for refusing to take short-distance trips, officials said. 

The Mumbai traffic police division carried out a special crackdown on errant taxi and autorickshaw drivers from April 18 to May 2. During this operation, a total of 48,417 taxi and autorickshaw drivers were issued challans (penalty receipts) for various traffic violations, according to an official.

This included taxi and autorickshaw drivers found operating without proper uniforms or failing to carry valid permits, badges, or registration documents. Some of these drivers were also cited for refusing short-distance trips and carrying more passengers than their vehicles' designated capacity, the official added.

The action was taken against 48,417 taxi and autorickshaw drivers for violating traffic rules, and a total fine of Rs 40.25 lakh was collected from them. 

The process to suspend the licenses of 28,814 taxi and autorickshaw drivers for refusing short-distance trips to commuters is currently underway, he added.

In another incident, In a major crackdown on auto and taxi drivers violating traffic rules, particularly for refusing to ply, the traffic police issued over 48,000 e-challans over a two-week period. The special campaign was conducted from April 18 to May 4 under the supervision of Joint Commissioner of Traffic, Anil Kumbhare.

Police stated that 28,814 challans were issued for refusal to ply, 1,164 for not wearing uniforms, 6,268 for carrying more passengers than permitted, and 12,171 for other violations. "We collected Rs 40.25 lakh in fines," a police officer confirmed.

The process of suspending the licenses of 28,814 auto and taxi drivers for refusing to ply is currently underway at the Regional Transport Offices (RTO).
