Mumbai Air Pollution: Over the past few days, Mumbai's air quality has been getting worse. As a result, on December 30, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced steps to improve the quality of the air, including stopping construction. This will result in halting construction works in locations where the air quality index (AQI) enters the poor category, which is 200.
The head of the Mumbai civic body, Bhushan Gagrani, informed reporters on December 30 that all public and private construction projects have been halted in the Byculla and Borivali East neighbourhoods of Mumbai, where the AQI has regularly gone above 200.
Gargrani told reporters, "In all the areas of Mumbai where the AQI index surpasses the 200 mark, we will be stopping work at all construction sites under the GRAP-IV norms. Once the AQI breaches 200, the rule will be implemented immediately without issuing any stop-work notices to the developers."
To lessen pollution from construction activities, the BMC has released environmental management plans and 28-point detailed instructions.

A total prohibition on construction operations is one of the GRAP 4 restrictions under the winter air pollution control plan since the air quality deteriorated to the "severe" level as a result of unfavourable weather circumstances. Earlier this month, Delhi enforced Stage 4 limits due to declining air quality.
Due to deteriorating air quality, construction projects in Mumbai have been given 'stop-work' warnings.
According to a statement released by the BMC on December 30, it has so far assessed 877 construction projects and issued "Stop Work Notices" at roughly 286 locations, and this procedure will go on indefinitely.
