Mumbai News: Flight operations at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport will be halted for six hours on Thursday, October 17, to conduct essential post-monsoon maintenance on its two cross-runways.
The airport management, Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL), has announced that both runways, RWY 09/27 and RWY 14/32, will be closed from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM. This temporary shutdown is part of the airport's annual maintenance plan, with a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) issued six months prior to the closure.

MIAL stated, "As part of our comprehensive post-monsoon runway maintenance plan, the cross runways will be temporarily non-operational." The flight schedules for arrivals and departures will be adjusted accordingly to minimise disruption.
The primary goal of this closure is to complete necessary repairs and maintenance to ensure that the airport's infrastructure adheres to global safety standards. This routine practice is carried out with precision to guarantee operational continuity and passenger safety, reinforcing a safety-first approach in airside operations.
Passengers are advised to check their flight status and stay informed about any changes to schedules as the airport undertakes this vital maintenance work.
In separate news, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Mumbai's first underground Metro Line 3, known as the Aqua Line, on October 5. This new 12.69-km stretch connects Aarey JVLR and Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) and features 10 operational stations, significantly improving connectivity across South Mumbai and suburban areas. Real estate experts believe the metro will boost the South Mumbai real estate market, particularly benefiting middle-class professionals who commute to business hubs like Worli and BKC.

Pramod Vyas, president of SMART, stated that the improved transport links could lead to redevelopment projects catering to senior executives. Currently, apartment prices in South Mumbai range from ₹45,000 to ₹1.50 lakh per square foot, while office rentals stabilise between ₹150 and ₹250 per square foot, influenced by a shortage of quality spaces. The Aqua Line is expected to increase demand for commercial properties in South Mumbai, which currently lacks Grade A office options.
