Mumbai Weather Update: The air quality in India’s financial capital deteriorated on Friday, November 28, morning as the Air Quality Index touched 152, taking it into the ‘unhealthy’ category. A heavy blanket of smog enveloped the sky over the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) and nearby pockets early in the morning.

Besides BKC, Chembur (138), Malad West (136), Ghatkopar (139), and Mazgaon (134) also experienced a deplorable air quality situation.

Residents in the area told news agency ANI that due to the rise in pollution levels, both breathing and outdoor activities are becoming increasingly difficult. “Rising pollution has made it harder for me to even step out of the house,” a senior citizen residing in Bandra said. Meanwhile, a local cyclist described the air quality as ‘extremely polluted’ for more than a week.

Earlier, the Bombay High Court had slammed the Maharashtra government for linking the declining air quality in the city to the volcanic eruption that happened in Ethiopia

BMC Takes Steps To Curb Rising Pollution Levels

Amid the heightened pollution levels, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued 53 stop-work notices to construction sites that have been found violating the pollution-control norms. “AQI sensors must remain fully functional during this time. Strict actions will be taken against the appropriate authorities if any sensor is found to be non-functional,” said Additional Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Joshi, quoted PTI. He further said that the civic body is currently inspecting 662 AQI monitoring systems, out of which 177 are non-functional.

Political Tussle Over Mumbai AQI

Meanwhile, a political tussle has started over the deplorable air quality levels. Aaditya Thackeray, MLA of the Worli Legislative Assembly, slammed the ruling government for their lack of any initiative towards the matter. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he wrote, “Even as the AQI of Mumbai gets terrible each day, and we compete with Delhi in the ‘terrible AQI’ race, the governments from top to bottom, currently controlled by the BJP and its allies, conveniently ignore the plight of the people. All they care about is builders and contractors and not citizens.”

Milind Deora, Rajya Sabha Member from Maharashtra, wrote on X, “Mumbai’s air pollution crisis is no longer a seasonal issue; it is a public health emergency. I have written to the BMC Commissioner appealing for immediate & extraordinary action, including a temporary halt on all digging & construction work until air quality improves.”
