The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to build a viewing tower near the Bandra-Worli Sea Link in Mumbai to offer a scenic view of the city's skyline and the Arabian Sea. The tower will be constructed as part of BMC's Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) initiative, The Indian Express reported.

Details of project

The tower will be a sewage treatment plant, designed to attract tourists. It will also provide knowledge of BMC's long civic management history. The tower will be 50 metres tall and will have an open seating gallery. It will have ramps and an elevator to facilitate smooth access, as per the Indian Express report. The ground and the first floor of the tower will have a knowledge centre, which will highlight BMC's history and the initiatives taken by it in the direction of water conservation.

Due to the proximity to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link and therefore the sensitivity concerned, civic authorities were permitted to build the STP with the condition that it remained below ground level. Resultantly, key treatment units like the membrane tank are being constructed underground.

Samruddhi Expressway update

In another major update for the Mumbai residents, the last phase of the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway, which runs for 76 km between Igatpuri and Amane, is likely to be inaugurated along with the southbound carriageway of the Thane Creek Bridge on May 1.

Once fully operational, the expressway will significantly reduce the travel time between Mumbai and Nagpur. The commuters will have to take only 8 hours to travel between these two top Maharashtra cities.
