The Mumbai Coastal Road (MCR) is all set for a major milestone with the partial opening of its highly anticipated 7.5-km seaside promenade by August 15. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is expected to officiate the inauguration, which will take place on or before Independence Day. Stretching from Priyadarshini Park to the Worli end of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, the promenade will be more than twice the length of the iconic Marine Drive promenade (3.5 km).

“The promenade is almost ready, and tests for speed cameras have also been completed,” said civic chief and administrator Bhushan Gagrani. “Although access is currently restricted with barricades, the completed sections will be opened to the public on or before August 15.”

About Mumbai Coastal Road

The Mumbai Coastal Road project, costing Rs 13,984 crore, stretches from the Princess Street Flyover at Marine Lines to the Worli end of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. It features a 10.58-kilometre, eight-lane expressway connecting Marine Drive to Worli. A key component of the project is a wide promenade designed for pedestrians, joggers, and cyclists, offering 19 pedestrian underpasses, with four opening initially at Amarsons Garden, Mahalaxmi Temple, Worli Dairy, and Bindu Madhav Thackeray Chowk. These underpasses are equipped with ramps for differently-abled individuals. The promenade also includes a dedicated cycling track and cycle stands at various locations.

Mumbai Coastal Road Facilities

Public amenities such as benches, litter bins, trees, bio-toilets, and drinking water stations are provided, with additional toilet blocks planned near park areas. To accommodate the increased foot traffic, BEST is working on introducing bus services along the coastal road, supported by four bus bays and a terminus near Worli Dairy.
