Mumbai News: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday virtually inaugurated a 5.25 km promenade and four pedestrian underpasses on the Mumbai Coastal Road, ensuring faster travel to the commuters and a leisure space to the public. Mumbaikars can now stroll, jog, or cycle along the stretch as the road is open for 24-hour vehicular movement from midnight of Independence Day.
“All the work on the coastal road is finished, an order said, following which the entire stretch was opened for vehicles from Saturday morning (August 17). The order to open all the bridges, tunnels and underpasses of both south and north-bound lanes for vehicular traffic was issued on Friday,” the official was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.
Details About The Mumbai Coastal Road Promenade
The 5.25 km promenade on the Mumbai Coastal Road spans from Priyadarshini Park to Worli, which is twice the length of Marine Drive. It is designed to withstand rough monsoon tides and is equipped with broad footpaths, landscape gardens, flowering plants, cycle tracks, and wheelchair-friendly ramps. The road is a place for residents to unwind, cycle or walk.
Multiple benches are placed along the stretch, allowing visitors to pause and soak in the calming sea views. On the other hand, Bhulabhai Desai Road, Haji Ali Junction, near Worli Dairy, and Bindumadhav Thackeray Chowk ensure safe and convenient access to the commuters.
While inaugurating the Coastal Road virtually from MMRDA’s new Bandra (East) Headquarters, Fadnavis said, “This promenade will redefine the way Mumbai connects with its coastline.” He further urged the motorists to obey the speed limits, warning that CCTV cameras would penalise violators.
Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde called the project a “urban makeover”. He further pointed out the ongoing plans of constructing a 70-hectare park along the road. “With the entire stretch of the coastal road now open, the north-bound connector from Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Road to the Rajiv Gandhi Sea Link was closed as it is no longer needed,” the PTI report added.
