A 33-year-old Mumbai college professor was fatally stabbed at Malad railway station on Saturday evening after a brief altercation with a co-passenger while getting off a local train, police said. The Government Railway Police (GRP) arrested the accused, 27-year-old Omkar Shinde, in connection with the murder. The victim’s body has been sent for post-mortem examination.
How Did Accused Got Arrested College Professor Accused
The Borivali Government Railway Police swiftly began probing the incident, scanning footage from the station’s surveillance cameras. Visuals showed a suspect dressed in a white shirt and blue jeans escaping via a foot overbridge moments after the stabbing. Relying on CCTV leads and technical inputs, investigators traced the accused, Shinde, to Vasai and took him into custody.
"While the argument over getting down from the train is the reported cause, we are investigating if there was any prior enmity or if other factors influenced such a violent outburst," stated a police official.
According to the TOI the victim, Alok Singh, was a junior college faculty member at the Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and Economics in Vile Parle. According to police, Singh had boarded a Borivali-bound local train from Vile Parle station and was attempting to get down at Malad when an altercation broke out with another commuter just before 6 pm.
Police said the argument escalated suddenly, and the unidentified accused allegedly pulled out a sharp weapon and stabbed Singh in the abdomen before jumping off the train and fleeing the scene as it halted at Malad station. Singh managed to get off the train but collapsed on Platform No. 1, bleeding profusely.
Railway authorities alerted the police after receiving information about a man lying injured on the platform. Singh was rushed to Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital in Kandivali, where doctors declared him dead. Hospital sources confirmed that he had sustained knife injuries, including a deep wound to the abdomen.
Eyewitnesses told the police that the attack happened without warning, leaving Singh little time to react. He was reportedly stabbed multiple times before collapsing on the platform while trying to stop the bleeding.
Police later informed Singh’s family and his colleagues at the college. A teacher from NM College described him as calm, polite and someone who generally avoided conflicts. Singh had been teaching mathematics and statistics in the junior college section since 2024 and had left the college for home between 5.15 pm and 5.30 pm on Saturday.
Family Background
Singh lived in Malad East with his wife and had been married for only a couple of years. A relative said the family was shocked by the incident and urged the police to arrest the accused at the earliest. Local BJP leaders also visited the hospital late at night.
