Mumbai Dry Day: Mumbai and other parts of the nation observed a dry day (No liquor day) on October 2 (Thursday), on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Liquor shops and wine stores will remain shut temporarily and bars, pubs and restaurants serving liquor will also face restrictions.
Earlier, the Excise Department issued a notification to all wine shops and bars and restaurants, ordering them not to sell alcohol on the Gandhi Jayanti, October 2 (dry day). According to the notification, all liquor shops, pubs, bars, and restaurants across Maharashtra will remain closed on October 2 (Thursday) in observance of Gandhi Jayanti, which also coincides with Dussehra this year.
Action If Wine Is Served
On dry day, the sale and serving of alcohol are strictly prohibited across all licensed outlets, including private and government-run establishments. Restaurants, hotels, and retail shops are not allowed to serve or sell alcohol throughout the day. The government has warned that consumption of alcohol on dry days is a punishable offence.
President Murmu, PM Modi Pay Homage To Mahatma Gandhi
Meanwhile, on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, President Droupadi Murmu, PM Modi and other dignitaries paid thier tributes to Mahatma Gandhi.
PM Modi, in an X post, said his government will follow his path for building a developed India. He said on X, "Gandhi Jayanti is about paying homage to the extraordinary life of beloved Bapu, whose ideals transformed the course of human history. He demonstrated how courage and simplicity could become instruments of great change."
PM Modi said Gandhi believed in the power of service and compassion as essential means of empowering people. He also paid homage to India's second prime minister, Lal Bahadur Shastri, whose birth anniversary, too, fell on Thursday.
