A massive fire broke out in a 24-storey residential building in the western suburbs in Mumbai on Sunday afternoon, leaving a woman dead and 18 others injured. the civic officials said.
According to the officials the incident took place at around 3 pm in the high-rise building in Dahisar area of Mumbai. The fire erupted on the seventh floor of the New Janakalyan Society at Shanti Nagar in Dahisar East, the official added.
"Thirty-six residents were rescued, of whom 19 were rushed to different hospitals. Of the seven who were admitted to Rohit Hospital, one, a woman, died. One male from this group is critical. The condition of others is stable. Ten of the injured were taken to Northern Care Hospital, and one each to Pragati Hospital and civic-run Shatabdi Hospital," he said.
Speaking about the rescue and dousing operation, an officer earlier said that the fire department official said that the high-rise was smoke-logged due to fire, which made it difficulties for them to douse the fire.
At least seven fire engines and other emergency response vehicles were at the spot, he said, adding that the cause of the blaze was yet to be ascertained.
Earlier on Friday, a fire broke out in a single-storey dyeing unit in Maharashtra's Thane district.
The officials said that the blaze erupted at the premises in the Kamatghar area in Bhiwandi town around 10 pm. The firefighting operation continued overnight, and the blaze was brought under control with two fire engines.
The fire was aggravated due to the presence of clothes in the factory. The cause of the fire was not ascertained during the dousing operation.

Similarly, on Thursday, a massive fire erupted in a firecracker shop in Malad in north Mumbai. The fire at the shop in a chawl on Undrai Road near Malad police station started around 7:00 pm, following which four fire engines were deployed to put it out.
The officials said, "The fire was doused at 10:30pm and cooling operations are underway at the site. No one was hurt in the incident. The cause of the fire is being ascertained".
