Mumbai: A man in naval uniform tricked a sailor on duty in South Mumbai and managed to flee with an INSAS rifle and ammunition in South Mumbai. The security breach was reported from a naval residential area, police said on Saturday night.
The person posing as a navy officer approached a junior sailor on sentry duty. The man demanded that the sailor surrender his rifle and ammunition as he introduced himself as a replacement. On acquiring the weapons, the man vanished from the spot.
"Loss of a rifle along with ammunition from a sentry post was reported on the night of September 6, 2025 in the Navy’s residential area in Mumbai. A junior sailor, whilst on sentry duty, was allegedly approached by another person in naval uniform who relieved him of his duties, indicating that he had been sent to do the same. Later, the person who assumed sentry duties was found missing from his post along with the rifle and ammunition," said Defence PRO, as reported by ANI.
As per the PRO, an extensive search operation is underway to recover the lost items, in coordination with Mumbai Police.
A Board of Inquiry has been ordered to investigate into the circumstances leading to the incident. The case is also under investigation by other Government agencies and the Indian Navy is extending all necessary assistance to this effort.

A case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Act has been registered against the unidentified man at Cuffe Parade Police Station.
