Lok Adalat Appointment: Lok Adalat, also called the 'People's Court', is an important part of India's alternative dispute resolution system. It was established under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987. Lok Adalats, which run under the supervision of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), give people an opportunity to resolve disputes without any cost and quickly, thereby reducing the burden on traditional courts.
These courts adjudicate civil disputes (such as property, matrimonial or consumer issues), compoundable criminal cases and pre-litigation matters. Mutual settlement is encouraged and awards given are equivalent to court decrees. These are final and cannot be appealed against, ensuring speedy justice.
NALSA, in collaboration with State and District Legal Services Authorities, organises Lok Adalats across the country. National Lok Adalats are scheduled for the second Saturday of March, May, September and December in 2025. This time, the National Lok Adalat will be held on September 13. They resolve thousands of cases in a single day, especially for communities that find it difficult to access justice. They are chaired by retired judges, judicial officers or advocates. Mediation is preferred here, which also saves relationships and reduces the backlog of courts. There is no court fee, making them even more affordable.
To participate, people can book an appointment online.
