Mumbai News: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has proposed building a 21-kilometre-long double-decker flyover connecting Shil Phata junction with Ranjnoli junction in Bhiwandi via Kalyan. Once completed, it could become the longest flyover in the country.

The Hindustan Times report cited sources in MMRDA as stating that, the structure will feature a four-lane road and metro rail tracks on separate levels. It will also link with major ongoing infrastructure projects, including the Virar-Alibaug multi-modal corridor and the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train corridor.

An official from MMRDA said the authority is in the process of appointing a consultant to prepare a detailed project report (DPR). The consultant will not only design the plan but also assist in the bidding and execution stages.

Longest City Flyover In The Making

Currently, Hyderabad’s 11-km Visweswaraiah flyover holds the record as India’s longest. The Yamuna Expressway, though 165 km long, is categorised as an elevated road since it connects cities rather than functioning as a city flyover.

Route To Connect Key Highways And Corridors

As per MMRDA’s proposal, the new flyover will start from Shil Phata on National Highway 48, pass through Dombivli and Kalyan, and end at Ranjnoli junction on National Highway 160. It will connect to key transport links such as the Airoli-Katai Freeway at Katai Naka and the Virar-Alibaug corridor soon after.

Metro Connectivity On Upper Deck

The upper level of the flyover is designed to carry three metro lines, Metro 5 (Bhiwandi to Kalyan), Metro 12 (Kalyan to Taloja), and Metro 14 (Kanjurmarg to Badlapur). The project will also consider the nearby alignment of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train.

Officials added that the structure will cross railway tracks at two points, near Katai Naka and Patri Pul in Kalyan. Construction over the busy central line is expected to be one of the most complex aspects of the project due to high train traffic.
