Mumbai Local Train Update: The Central Railway (CR) has announced the launch of 14 new air-conditioned local train services on the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT)-Panvel Harbour line. The move aims to improve travel comfort for daily commuters and meet the growing demand for AC services on the Harbour corridor.
The new AC locals will be introduced from January 26, 2026 and will replace existing non-AC local train services on the route.
AC Services On Central Railway Increase To 94
With the addition of these new trains:
The total number of AC local services on Central Railway will rise to 94
This includes 80 AC locals on the main line and 14 on the Harbour line
The overall number of suburban services on Central Railway will remain unchanged at 1,820
The Indian Express report cited Officials as clarifying that the change involves only a replacement of rakes and will not reduce service frequency.

Non-AC Operations On Sundays And Holidays
Central Railway has also clarified that three of the newly introduced AC local services will operate with non-AC rakes on Sundays and nominated holidays. These include:
Vashi-Vadala Road local at 04:15 AM
Panvel-CSMT local at 06:17 AM
Vadala Road-Panvel local at 05:06 AM
Passenger Demand Behind The Move
In an official statement, Central Railway said the decision was taken in response to long-standing commuter demand for AC services on the Harbour line. The railway added that the move is part of its ongoing efforts to modernise Mumbai’s suburban rail network while maintaining service reliability.
