Aarey To Worli Route: South Mumbai is all set to get its long-awaited Metro connection in March. The metro connection will offer a smooth, air-conditioned escape from the city’s traffic. The fares will start at just Rs 10 and go up to Rs 60. This new underground corridor promises to transform the daily commute for thousands of Mumbai residents.

This extension is part of Metro Line 3, which first opened in October last year between Aarey and BKC, as per a TOI report. Now, it will stretch further to Worli Naka (Acharya Atre Chowk station), creating a 22km underground route from Aarey to Worli. This new link will provide a much-needed alternative to the city’s packed local trains and congested roads.

Aarey To Worli Route: Rates

For Rs 60, commuters will soon be able to bypass notorious traffic hotspots like Lady Jamshedji Road and Dr Annie Besant Road, as per the report. The route will connect key areas such as Dharavi, Dadar, Siddhivinayak, and Worli, making travel faster and easier.

The new line is expected to ease the burden on road traffic and make daily commutes more comfortable. Although there are some connectivity gaps—such as the Metro station in Dadar being about a kilometre away from the main railway station—the convenience of travelling between major business hubs like BKC and Worli without battling road traffic is a major plus.

Building this underground line wasn’t easy. One of the biggest engineering challenges was tunnelling beneath the Mithi River, which posed significant technical hurdles.

“We used two methods under the river—a twin tunnel by tunnel boring machines (TBM) connecting BKC to Dharavi, and a siding using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM),” explained SK Gupta, director (projects) at MMRC. “Both had to be done carefully due to the soft, waterlogged ground above.”

Special tunnel boring machines designed to handle soft, water-heavy soil were used for the 1.8km stretch between BKC and Dharavi—with 1.2km running directly under the riverbed. To prevent water leaks, engineers used hydrophilic gaskets that expand on contact with water, ensuring a watertight tunnel.

Mumbai Metro Line 3 Routes

Once fully operational, Mumbai Metro Line 3 will run along a 33.5 km underground corridor, connecting Aarey Depot in the western suburbs to Cuffe Parade in South Mumbai. The route will have 27 stations, including major stops at SEEPZ, BKC (Bandra-Kurla Complex), Dharavi, Dadar, Siddhivinayak, Worli Naka (Acharya Atre Chowk), Mumbai Central, CSMT (Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus), and Churchgate. This line will provide direct connectivity between residential areas, commercial hubs, and business districts while significantly reducing travel time and easing congestion on the city’s roads and local trains.
