Mumbai Metro Line 3: The long-awaited Mumbai Metro Line 3 has introduced the Kalbadevi Metro Station, giving one of the city’s oldest commercial areas a modern identity while retaining its cultural essence. Built using the advanced NATM tunnelling technique, the station is designed to combine technology with tradition in the heart of south Mumbai.

Kalbadevi, known for its wholesale markets, historic temples and strong Marathi roots, will now benefit from improved connectivity through the metro network. The new station is expected to ease congestion and provide a faster and more reliable commuting option for thousands of daily travellers in the densely populated neighbourhood.

The first images of the station showcase wide concourses, polished granite walls and large escalators built to manage heavy footfall. Clear signboards in English, Hindi and Marathi direct passengers to ticket counters, help desks and exits. Accessibility has been prioritised with lifts, escalators and tactile pathways for persons with disabilities.

On the platform level, commuters are welcomed by an electronic signboard displaying “Welcome to Kalbadevi Metro Station.” Glass-panelled safety doors, bright lighting and long corridors give the station a futuristic look while ensuring safety.

Officials from the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) said the design was created to manage high passenger volumes, keeping in mind the commercial importance of Kalbadevi. Multiple exits connect directly to prominent landmarks and market areas, offering convenience to traders, visitors, and shopkeepers.

Beyond transport benefits, MMRC emphasised that the station reflects the cultural character of the locality, aiming to create a bridge between Marathi heritage and Mumbai’s rapid urban growth.

With Kalbadevi station now operational, the Aqua Line of Metro 3 further strengthens its role in reshaping the city’s urban transport network.
