Mumbai News: A 56-year-old woman lawyer was found dead at her residence in Powai, Mumbai, on Sunday afternoon. Police said her husband has been arrested on charges of murdering her after an argument.

According to a NDTV report, the victim, identified as Savitridevi Chandrabhan, was living alone in a flat in the Raheja Vihar area of Powai. Locals informed the police after she was found unconscious in her home. She was taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.

The Free Press Journal report cited officials as stating that, Savitridevi and her husband, Rajiv Chandrabhan (60), had been living separately for the past year due to frequent disputes. Rajiv had retired from a private airline two years ago and differences between the couple reportedly increased after his retirement. While Savitridevi continued to stay in Powai, Rajiv shifted to Marol.

On Sunday, Rajiv went to meet his wife at her flat. Police said he wanted her to reconcile and live with him again. When she refused, an argument broke out. Investigators allege that in a fit of anger, Rajiv smothered her with a pillow, leading to suffocation.

Initially, Rajiv denied his involvement when questioned by police. However, during interrogation, he allegedly confessed to assaulting his wife. Based on the findings, police arrested him on murder charges.

“During the investigation, it was revealed that the accused entered her flat and attacked her. He has been taken into custody, and further probe is underway,” a Mumbai Police official said.

The case has been registered at Powai Police Station and investigation is ongoing.
