Mumbai Metro network has become the third-longest metro rail route in the country with the opening of the Line 3 for commercial purposes. The financial capital now has nearly 80 km of metro rail network.
Further, with the phased inauguration of the Line 2B, 4 and 9, Mumbai Metro is poised to have the second largest metro route in the country. Once the three lines become functional, the Mumbai Metro will have more than 150 km of rail network running across the city, taking it to the second position, just after the Delhi Metro.

India’s rapidly expanding metro rail network showcases the country’s push towards modern, sustainable, and urban transportation. Over the past decade, metro projects have gained momentum across various cities like Patna, Kanpur and Indore, pushing the total operational stretch past 1000 km. This surpasses the RRTS routes across the country.
Mumbai Metro Line 3
The Mumbai Metro Line-3 or the Aqua Line was divided into three different phases. Of these, the first phase from Aarey JVLR to BKC was inaugurated on October 7, 2024, the second phase from BKC to Acharya Atre Chowk was inaugurated on May 10, 2025, and the Phase 2B was inaugurated from Acharya Atre Chowk to Cuffe Parade was inaugurated on October 8, 2025.
Regular metro services on the recently inaugurated metro line is scheduled to begin on October 15, with trains operating between 5:55 AM and 10:30 PM from Aarey JVLR to Acharya Atre Chowk.
