Mumbai Metro Line 4 Girders Installation: 8 U girders were installed overnight at Kapurbawdi metro station of the soon-to-be-operational Mumbai Metro line 4, achieving a milestone. The Kapurbawdi station will serve as a key interchange for the newly constructed corridor from Wadala to Gaimukh.
The 35.2 kilometre fully elevated corridor with 32 stations, an automated train system, and energy-efficient infrastructure, nears completion under the supervision of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).
Located on Ghodbunder Road in Thane, Kapurbawdi station will serve as a key interlink between line 4 of the Mumbai Metro and the proposed Mumbai Metro line 5 (Thane- Bhiwandi-Kalyan).
The multi-level interchange will significantly reduce the traffic congestion on roadways while providing a feasible travel option across Mumbai’s extended suburbs after it becomes operational.
According to a report by the Indian Express, quoting MMRDA officials, the installation of girders took place during the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday, and included the positioning of girders weighing nearly 98 metric tonnes each, adding up to a total of approximately 783 metric tonnes. Girders were installed carefully as the operation took place without stopping traffic. The girders were installed on both up and down corridors as the operation took place across two spans.
“The station is being constructed as a new 185-metre-long elevated level with improved facilities to handle high-density Metro traffic. Its development sits within MMRDA’s overall vision of bringing mobility solutions across the city closer together to facilitate quicker, greener commuting,” an MMRDA official was quoted as saying in the report.
With the help of high-capacity cranes, multi-axle trailers, pullers, and lifting gear, over 900 riggers, skilled and unskilled workers and traffic management officials carried out the operation.
Metro Line 4 will connect Central Mumbai to Thane and beyond, transforming the connectivity game in East-West Mumbai.
