Mumbai Metro Update: Amid uncertainty over the proposed car depot at Kanjurmarg, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is reportedly planning to launch Line 6 in the second phase of 2026. The authority has decided to continue the works using an alternative arrangement amid delays in the land clearance at multiple sites. The stretch will boost the regional connectivity and will provide convenience to thousands of commuters by cutting the travel time and reducing traffic congestion. It will connect the eastern region of the city to the western by linking Swami Samarth Nagar in Andheri (West) with Vikhroli.
While providing details, the officials stated that a unique maintenance yard has been planned for the rakes, adding that the construction work has already begun. “We have planned this unique maintenance yard for the rakes. Eight elevated pit lines will be built that will allow our staff to do regular maintenance and checks of the rakes. For scheduled periodic overhauling, they can be transported to our Mandale depot,” an MMRDA official was quoted as saying by the Hindustan Times.

The authority made the arrangements after a delay in securing around 15 hectares of land at Kanjurmarg for the car depot. However, the officials stated that the MMRDA will not wait for approval anymore due to the availability of the elevated eight-pit deck. “But with the elevated eight-pit deck and single-pit lines next to metro stations wherever possible, we need not wait for the Kanjurmarg car depot,” another official was quoted as saying.
The Rs 6,700 crore project has faced multiple delays after the construction work first began in 2017, the authority asserted. However, it further clarified that the stretch is set to begin operation in the second half of the year, adding that it will provide relief to the passengers by passing through the key areas.
