Samruddhi Expressway Update: The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) is planning to make the 701-km Samruddhi Expressway, also known as Hindu Hrudaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg, solar-powered.
The expressway connects Nagpur and Mumbai, and over 2.5 crore vehicles have already taken advantage of the route since its partial opening in December 2022.
Samruddhi Expressway Turns Solar
A private renewable energy company has started setting up solar panels on the Samruddhi Expressway in Maharashtra. The installation process has begun with equipment already placed at Karjalad in Buldhana and Mehkar Interchange in Washim district. This initiative aims to make the expressway more eco-friendly by harnessing solar power.
The solar power project on the Samruddhi Expressway aims to generate 204 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy. This energy will be used to light up the expressway and will also be fed into the power grid as per agreements.
MSRDC Launches Solar Plan On Samruddhi Expressway
The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has launched a solar power project on the Samruddhi Expressway. In the first phase, solar panels installed at Karjalad in Buldhana and Mehkar in Washim will generate 5 MW of electricity, with 3 MW coming from Karjalad and 2 MW from Mehkar, which has already begun producing power.
According to MSRDC officials, this initiative aims to tap a new revenue stream beyond toll collections and leasing out spaces for public amenities. The corporation plans to expand this project, targeting a total of 204 MW of renewable energy generation across various interchanges.
Manuj Jindal, Joint Managing Director of MSRDC, stated that the organisation intends to implement similar solar energy projects on other proposed expressways, promoting sustainable infrastructure development. The generated electricity will be sold to the grid under a 2022 agreement with MahaVitaran at Rs 3.05 per unit, potentially earning the corporation Rs 18 lakh monthly and over Rs 2 crore annually.
