Mumbai News: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has set a new target to open the upcoming east-west overbridge at Sion for traffic by June 2026. The project, estimated at Rs 60 crore, aims to offer smoother movement between the Eastern Express Highway and Lal Bahadur Shastri (LBS) Marg. The earlier bridge, built in 1912, was removed after a structural audit found it unsafe.

Civic Review And Updated Timelines

At a recent review meeting, senior civic officials, along with representatives from Mumbai Traffic Police and the Railways, discussed progress and pending tasks. Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar asked all involved agencies to coordinate closely to avoid inconvenience to residents. He directed teams to finish all construction by May 31, 2026 so that the bridge can open the following day.

According to an Indian Express report, Work on girder fabrication is currently taking place in Nagpur and Ambala. According to the civic body, the subway at LBS Marg is expected to be ready by the end of this month. The second underpass near the Dharavi stretch is projected for completion by February, after which girder launching over the railway tracks is planned for March.

Road Links And Commissioning Plans

Bangar also stated that the approach roads connecting Dharavi and LBS Marg should be completed by April 15. Once this is done, the eastern arm of the road will be opened. If all agencies follow the assigned deadlines, officials believe the entire structure will be ready for full use by the end of May 2026.
