Mumbai-Pune Expressway: The exit towards Mumbai city from the Yashwantrao Chavan Mumbai-Pune Expressway in Panvel will be closed for six months starting February 11, as reported by the Free Press Journal. This closure is necessary for the construction of a new flyover and an underpass at Kalamboli Circle, part of the Kalamboli Junction improvement project being carried out by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC).

Kalamboli Junction Upgrade

The order for the closure was issued by Tirupati Kakade, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) in Navi Mumbai, under the Motor Vehicles Act. The construction work is expected to alleviate traffic congestion at Kalamboli Circle once completed, according to DCP Kakade.

Traffic Advisory

Traffic officials from Navi Mumbai have indicated that the closure will affect all vehicles, including both light and heavy transport heading towards Panvel, Mumbra, and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust. This measure aims to facilitate smooth construction and minimise congestion in the vicinity.

Mumbai-Pune Expressway: Alternate Routes For Commuters

To assist commuters, the report outlines alternate routes for those using the exit towards Mumbai in Panvel. Vehicles on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway heading to Panvel, Goa and JNPT will be redirected at Konphata (9.600 km) to NH-48 via Palaspe Circle.

For vehicles travelling from Pune to Mumbai and destined for Taloja, Kalyan and Shilphata, drivers should continue straight for 1.200 km on the Panvel-Sion Highway. They will need to turn right beneath the Purusharth Petrol Pump flyover and follow the route through Roadpali and NH-48.

The Mumbai-Pune Expressway, which opened in 2002, is India’s first six-lane, fully access-controlled expressway, spanning 94.5 km. It significantly reduces travel time between Mumbai and Pune to around 2 to 2.5 hours while avoiding congestion on the old Mumbai-Pune Highway (NH-48). The expressway features multiple tunnels, designated toll plazas and a speed limit of 80 km/h for cars, offering a scenic drive through the Sahyadri Hills, particularly during the monsoon. To address increasing traffic, expansion projects are currently underway to add lanes and bypasses.
