Mumbai CNG Update: CNG supply across several parts of Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai faced major disruption on Sunday after a gas pipeline inside the Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers (RCF) compound was damaged. The incident affected the flow of gas to Mahanagar Gas Limited’s (MGL) City Gate Station (CGS) at Wadala, leading to supply cuts across the region.
The PTI report cited MGL as stating that the damage occurred to GAIL’s main gas pipeline due to third-party activity. The interruption at the Wadala station, one of the key points in MGL’s distribution network, caused several CNG pumps to run dry through the day. Many public transport vehicles in Mumbai including buses, autorickshaws and taxis depend on CNG supplied through these stations, resulting in inconvenience for commuters.
MGL stated that restoring supply to CNG stations is underway, but the utility has prioritised uninterrupted piped natural gas (PNG) supply to residential consumers. The company assured that household cooking gas connections remain unaffected despite the pipeline damage.
The Free Press Journal report cirted spokesperson as stating that some CNG stations, including those catering to public transport fleets, may remain out of service until normal gas flow to the Wadala station resumes. Industrial and commercial customers relying on CNG have been advised to temporarily shift to alternative fuels.

The disruption affected several pumps across Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai, creating long queues at operational stations and slowing public transport services. MGL confirmed that the issue was caused by damage to GAIL’s pipeline within the RCF premises, which halted gas supply to the CGS.
Repair work was carried out through the day, and supply to most CNG stations began to resume by evening. MGL said the network is expected to stabilise once full pressure is restored and operations at the Wadala station normalise.
The company apologised for the inconvenience and said efforts are being made to bring the entire supply system back to normal at the earliest.
