Mumbai Water Cut: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced a water supply disruption for nine hours on June 16, as per a report by The Mid-Day. The civic body has announced a water cut due to work on a 600-mm diameter pipeline along the Ghatkopar-Andheri Link Road, next to the Laxmibag Nala.
The water supply will remain disrupted in the Ghatkopar (East) area. The supply will be stopped at 8 am and will be restored at 5 pm. In its press release, the BMC said that the water supply will be restored to normal once the work is completed.
The civic body has urged the residents to cooperate with the authorities and conserve water. The residents are also advised to use the water judiciously.
According to the report, the BMC has also announced that it will release reserve water stock from lakes from June 16 to fulfill the city’s demand for drinking water.
The seven lakes that supply drinking water to Mumbai are Upper Vaitarna, Middle Vaitarna, Modak Sagar, Tansa, Bhatsa, Vehar, and Tulsi.
Three lakes, Upper Vaitarna, Middle vaitarna and Modak Sagar, are located on the Vaitarna River. On Thursday, the BMC stopped using water from Upper Vaitarna, which is located at the highest elevation.
The required amount of water has been transferred to Middle Vaitarna and Modak Sagar to ensure supply for the city. This supply will fulfill the city's demand for two days, following which the reserve water stock from the Upper Vaitarna Lake will be used from June 16 onwards.
Upper Vaitarna comes under the control of the state government, which allocates a fixed amount of water to the BMC annually for the city's requirement, as per the information from the hydraulics department. The catchment areas of these lakes have received 103 mm rainfall in the past 24 hours.
