Mumbai Weather: Mumbai's intense summer heat may soon ease, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light rain and thundershowers for the city and surrounding areas in the coming days. While no alerts have been issued specifically for Mumbai, a yellow alert has been issued for Thane and Raigad from March 31 to April 1, indicating the possibility of heavy rain and thunderstorms.

As temperatures soared, Santacruz recorded a high of 33.6 degrees Celsius, while Colaba reached 31 degrees. Weather experts predict that temperatures could exceed 36 degrees over the weekend. However, the expected rain from Monday could provide relief, with temperatures likely dropping to around 33 degrees Celsius after April 2.

Although summer showers are uncommon in Mumbai, they have occurred before. Last March, the city experienced 17 mm of rainfall, making it one of the wettest in recent times. This contrasts with 10 mm recorded in 2016 and 13 mm in 2015 at the Santacruz observatory.

In preparation for the anticipated rains, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is actively planning for the upcoming monsoon season. BMC chief Bhushan Gagrani led a high-level meeting focused on preventing waterlogging and ensuring smooth city operations. Officials were instructed to clear debris and barricades after construction work and to survey areas prone to flooding.

Gagrani also addressed the risk of landslides in eastern suburbs, directing the district administration to relocate residents from hazardous areas and conduct disaster preparedness training. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the Indian Navy have also been put on alert to assist with emergency operations if required.
