Mumbai Weather: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts thunderstorm activity and mild showers starting next week in Mumbai, providing some relief from the current dry weather. Although Mumbai and the nearby districts of Thane and Palghar have not received any warnings, the meteorological office has issued a yellow alert for all of Maharashtra due to the possibility of thunderstorms and strong winds over the next four days.
Mumbai awoke on Friday to a bright, clear sky. IMD's Santacruz station recorded 0.2 mm of rainfall, while the Colaba coastal observatory recorded NIL between Thursday and Friday morning. The suburbs had high temperatures of 32.6 degrees Celsius, 2.2 degrees above average, due to the dry season.
IMD Mumbai director Sunil Kamble told The Indian Express, “Since there has been no rain in the past eight days, the temperatures have risen and there is also wind discontinuity. There is also a low pressure area near Bangladesh. Owing to these factors, we are expecting thunderstorm activity in Mumbai and neighbouring areas.”
Kamble said that moderate rains may also be brought in for a while for Mumbai due to the thunderstorm activity. “Even though there is no alert in Mumbai, owing to wind discontinuity which will bring thunderstorms, we have issued a yellow alert across districts of Vidarbha, Madhya Maharashtra as well as Marathwada,” he added.
The IMD has issued a yellow alert in various districts of Marathwada, Madhya Maharashtra, and Vidarbha over the weekend, and in its forecast bulletin for the next five days, it has also issued a yellow alert in Raigad and Ratnagiri.
