A misalignment between the newly built Gokhale Bridge in Andheri, Mumbai, and the CD Barfiwala flyover drew significant criticism recently to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

On Monday night, a portion of the bridge was officially opened, and the BMC has blamed the Railways for the misalignment.

The commissioner of the civic body of Mumbai, I S Chahal, during the opening, stated that the newly constructed Gokhale bridge's height needed to be raised by 1.5 metres following guidelines provided by the Railways.

In a conversation with Times of India, Chahal said, “Owing to this, the Barfiwala flyover went below the old Gokhale bridge. However, we have got reputed institutions such as VJTI and IIT to look into the issue and, if needed, we may also consider placing a ramp to allow smooth flow of traffic from the Barfiwala flyover to Gokhale.”

According to a TOI report, commuters from places like Juhu drive straight onto the Gokhale Bridge over the Barfiwala flyover, bypassing the clogged SV Road below it.

In support of Commissioner Chahal, local Andheri MLA Ameet Satam stated that BMC cannot always be made fun of and that people should be aware that the civic body is acting in the city's best interests.

He said, “The policy of the Railways changed and it was therefore needed to increase the height of the new Gokhale Bridge.”

The recently opened phase of the new bridge has two lanes that permit traffic to flow from both sides, but it is only accessible to light motor vehicles. It has not yet been decided to launch the girder for the second phase of the bridge.

As soon as one side of the Gopalkrishna Gokhale Bridge was opened, citizens stormed social media with memes because of its misalignment, which highly disappointed them.

Taking to X, they expressed their dissatisfaction with not being able to utilise the Juhu connector (Barfiwala Flyover) to the Gokhale Bridge.
