The Maharashtra cabinet presided by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde approved the toll proposal of Rs 250 for the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), officials said on Thursday. India's longest sea bridge which will link Navi Mumbai is set to open for general traffic this month. State Minister Girish Mahajan said that the cabinet approved the toll amounts and it is very reasonable and lower than other highways.

A MTHL official said that the trans harbour sea bridge, named Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sewri-Nhava Sheva Atal Setu is likely to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the next few days of this month.

The MTHL, spanning 21.8 kilometres, was constructed at an expense of Rs 22,200 crore. The MTHL official claimed that to recover the mega-project costs, the toll will be levied for around 30 years by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) for which the road toll booths are built at Chirle in Navi Mumbai, reported news agency IANS.

The longest stream road-bridge in the nation began construction in 2018, but it was delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic and missed multiple deadlines. Nevertheless, it is now ready for its debut.

The sea bridge will enhance the connectivity in Mumbai and cut down the travel time between the mainland and the island city to just about 20-25 minutes. The project aims to improve East-West connectivity and bring more land to the island city.
