The Mumbai-Ahmedabad National Highway (NH-48) in Maharashtra’s Palghar district has experienced traffic snarls for the fifth consecutive day, leaving thousands of commuters and truck drivers stranded for hours amid growing frustration. Ambulances were caught in long queues, and many passengers missed flights and trains, highlighting the highway’s persistent infrastructure challenges.

The extensive traffic jam, spanning several kilometres near Vasai and Palghar, was reportedly caused by ongoing road repair work and the rerouting of heavy vehicles.

About NH-48

Linking Maharashtra and Gujarat, NH-48 serves as a vital economic corridor, passing through Mumbai, Thane, and Pune. While other regions witness the rapid completion of expressways, tunnels, and metro projects, this crucial highway continues to frustrate daily commuters.

For residents of Vasai-Virar, NH-48 is often the only viable route to Mumbai. Alternative options, such as the Ro-Ro ferry service, are frequently overcrowded, with lines of 100–125 vehicles, forcing commuters to allow at least five extra hours for travel. Elderly residents, unable to rely on trains, are left entirely dependent on this congested route.

Tuesday Traffic Jam Situation On Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway

According to PTI, 12 buses carrying students from classes 5 to 10, along with some college students from Thane and Mumbai, were stranded in the traffic jam from around 5:30 pm on Tuesday until early Wednesday morning.

The children, returning from a school picnic near Virar, reportedly spent several hours without food or water. By evening, many were tired, hungry, and anxious, while concerned parents anxiously awaited news of their safety.

Members of a local social organisation rushed to the scene, distributing water and biscuits to the stranded students and assisting drivers in navigating the congested lanes.
