Maharashtra: Two 19-year-old boys died in separate road accidents while returning home from work, both incidents linked to pothole-ridden roads. Locals alleged that despite repeated claims of development, the condition of the roads remains same and held the administration’s negligence responsible for the frequent mishaps.

In the first incident, Hemant Patil, a resident of Palghar, was driving his scooter on the Wada-Bhiwandi Highway when it collided with a trailer and skidded. Hemant, who worked at Blue Star Company in Vasuri and was the sole breadwinner of his family, died on the spot.
In another accident in Nagpur, Mahendra Fating fell into a waterlogged pothole along with his motorcycle. He sustained severe head injuries and died instantly. Mahendra was reportedly the nephew of former councillor Sarita Ishwar Kaware. His body was sent to Mayo Hospital for a post-mortem, and police have begun further investigation.
According to the NDTV report, to draw the administration’s attention to the poor condition of roads, which locals say have become “death traps,” citizens garland potholes as a mark of protest. Large craters on the Nashik-Trimbakeshwar Temple route are proving fatal for commuters. The Nationalist Youth Congress even held a symbolic ceremony near the potholes to pay tribute to those who lost their lives in such accidents.

"Roads from Pimpre, Thopetewadi to Gulunche and Jejuri to Kolvihire in Purandar Taluka of Baramati Lok Sabha Constituency are in bad condition. In many places there are potholes and in some places the asphalt has come out and the gravel has come up. The Jejuri-Kolvihire road was constructed a few days ago. It is obvious that the work of this road is of poor quality and now it is very difficult to travel on both these roads. My request to the Minister of Public Works is to please repair these roads immediately and provide relief to the citizens traveling here.," Supriya Sule posted on X (formerly Twitter).
