A day after the funeral of Ajit Pawar, senior NCP leaders met Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and staked a claim to the portfolios held by the state Deputy CM.

The meeting was held at the CM's official residence, Varsha, in south Mumbai, which lasted nearly one and a half hours. It was attended by senior NCP leaders, including Chhagan Bhujbal, national working president Praful Patel, state president Sunil Tatkare and former minister Dhananjay Munde, sources said.

Ajit Pawar served as the Deputy CM of Maharashtra and also held key portfolios, including Finance, State Excise and Sports, among others.

The party will also submit a formal letter demanding all the portfolios held by its leader in line with the party quota within the Mahayuti government.

Praful Patel spoke with the media after the meeting with CM Fadnavis and said NCP wants to fill the post as soon as possible. He added that any decision in this regard must be taken based on people’s sentiments.

He said, "We are partners in the Mahayuti alliance, so we have to make the right decision to fill the post held by Ajit Pawar as soon as possible. At the same time, I want to clarify that we need to consider the jan bhavna (public sentiment) before taking any decision. We must give the family some time to come out of their grief. We will soon discuss the party’s future course with Sunetra Pawar and the family".
